Guess what! We’ve all been there! It seems like as soon as someone starts talking about losing weight, they think they must do a complete overhaul and learn a new language.
The first thing I did when I started losing weight was simply cleaning up the meals I was already eating. Of course, if you’re eating burger and fries and fried chicken for lunch and dinner most days, then you do need to focus on an overhaul.
Luckily, these meals that I have listed are actually easy, delicious and simple enough to make that even if you can’t cook a pot of rice (that used to be me), you can whip these up.
I want you to know that eating healthy meals for weight loss does not have to be complicated.
You can do this! And you can discover a love of new food in the process.
Do you have healthy meal ideas for Weight Loss?
Of course, I do! But first, let me say that these meals are my preference. I have eaten these meals and continue to do so because I enjoy them. Many of these meals I grew up on and have tweaked them to create a healthier version.
The funny thing is I’m not a good cook. I failed at cooking rice in a rice pot! Of course, now I cook rice perfectly but that took trial and error.
These awesome, healthy meal ideas for weight loss are forgiving. They are customizable. And they are delicious!

Growing up I ate a lot of grits, usually with cheese and bacon. However, as I have pursued a healthier lifestyle I have stopped having those type of items in the house. I reserve them for occasions where I eat out.
I have found so many ways to eat grits beyond what I was used too that I find myself reaching for a comforting bowl quite often.
As you will soon see, I don’t limit grits to just breakfast either. They are versatile and can complete any meal.
This is a staple in our home and I can tell you right now, I did not start off as an oatmeal fan. Nope. Not even remotely.
Being the cheap person that I am (go figure), I knew that it was a score in the nutrition and money department. One container at my local store costs $1.99 and lasts my husband and I for two weeks of daily breakfasts – day after day.
Oatmeal is a blank canvas and can usually be made to your liking. I prefer mine with bananas or with chopped green apples. Of course, you can get more elaborate and flavorful than that but I stick with a simplistic approach.
#3 Cold Cereal
The easiest of the bunch! I mean, who doesn’t like a bowl of cereal.
There are a ton of options to choose from and paired with a cold glass of almond milk, it is sure to be quick and fulfilling.
I started off measuring my cereal and paying attention to how much I needed to be satisfied. For me, that was two cups of Cheerios with one cup of almond milk and two teaspoons of sugar.
Lunch and Dinner Choices:
#4 Collard Greens and Cornbread
A Sunday dinner staple for many families in the south, collard greens and cornbread are nutritious and so good to eat.
Just thinking of collard greens and cornbread brings back fond memories of my childhood.
Grandma would have me go through the collard greens and remove the stems. I would watch as she prepared the water to soak them in so that they could be cleaned.
We would be in the kitchen for a few hours preparing a nice Sunday meal. Collard greens and cornbread would always be on the menu. So as you can expect, it’s a weekly rotation during the week for me as well.
#5 Rice and Beans
I mentioned before how I couldn’t cook a pot of rice a few years ago, and now when rice is on the menu guess who they are asking to make it? Me!
I know I shouldn’t be this proud about cooking rice, but I am. My husband suffered through rice mush for years. We got a rice cooker and I still couldn’t get it together. He never complained though. Thanks, honey!
The reason why I have made a big deal about rice is because, at our house, we eat rice every week. It’s not unusual for us to have 3 or 4 rice and bean meals through the week.
We have 4 different ways of cooking pinto beans and rice that ensures that we never get bored of this simple, filling combination.
#6 Soup and Salad
When you think about healthy meal ideas for weight loss, I know that soup and salad always come to mind. Grab a bowl of hearty soup and a big colorful salad for a satisfying meal. The different combinations for the soup and the salad entrees are endless.
They can be made with a variety of ingredients, fresh vegetables, and tasty salad dressings like this Strawberry Balsamic. You will never get bored as long as you have a good culinary imagination when it comes to the possibilities.
#7 Lentils and Chapati
Like beans, lentils are a forgiving and customizable dish. You can cook these a variety of ways and they come in different varieties.
I like to eat my lentils with whole wheat chapati which is a flatbread. It’s a delicious meal that the entire family will love.
I love a good pasta dish. A healthy spinach lasagna recipe can easily be made with Kite Hill Almond Ricotta and an oil-free pasta sauce like this one.
If you prefer the classics, then a pot of spaghetti marinara sauce is sure to impress. You can make it healthier by opting for whole wheat pasta if you like. Make sure to dress the sauce up with veggies for an added boost.
#9 Bean Burgers
Quick meals are a must for when you’re low on time or too tired to cook up a nutritious dinner.
Bean burgers can be cooked in 8 to 12 minutes in the oven and sandwiched between a whole wheat bun for a delicious entrée. You can turn it into a complete meal by baking French fries, tossing a side salad or cutting up some fresh fruit.
#10 Mashed Potatoes and Gravy
The ultimate comfort food. I make a healthy version of this by using the naturally buttery Yukon potatoes. The end result is a light, fluffy and delicious mash that goes well with a vibrant gravy. My favorite gravy can be found here.
Healthy meals ideas for weight loss do not have to be complicated. Having enjoyable breakfast choices such as grits or cereal can put a great start to your day, while collard greens, bean burgers or lasagna can take comfort food to a whole new level.
